A Message About Your Water Bottle

October 26th, 2014 by

Aquafina, Dasani, and Poland Spring are names on the water bottle that have come to evoke images of pristine waterfalls, swift cool streams, and shimmering, unspoiled mountain lakes. As well they should. These three carefully selected names are among the largest selling brands of bottled water in the United States. They play a vital role in the American bottled water industry, an industry which touts the purity and health benefits of its product.

Plastic water bottles being landfilled (tamarayoungmarketing.empowernetwork.com)To be certain, the industry’s marketing strategy has been a resounding success. Once considered a luxury, a “superfluous choice,” bottled water has today become a staple in the American diet. It’s no longer an option; we have come to consider it a necessity. It is now more commonly found in the American refrigerator than a bottle of milk.

Since records started being kept in 1991, sales and consumption of bottled water have more than tripled. In 2013 Americans consumed over 10 billion gallons of bottled water. Today, 39% of the water we drink is bottled. According to the web site of the International Bottled Water Association,

“When it comes to quenching your thirst, nothing does it better than convenient, healthy, safe, zero calorie bottled water. It is the smart beverage choice. You can count on bottled water when it comes to reliable, safe, and consistent quality.”

The other side of this story: American tap water must meet exacting standards and rigorous tests. It is generally considered the safest in the world.

Cost Out Of Pocket

Somewhere (but not top of mind), we’re all aware of the costs of bottled water. Astronomical, right? Just this astronomical—depending on the brand, quantity, and water bottle size, it can cost from 300 to 2,700 times what we pay for tap water.

While the average cost of tap water is around $.003 a gallon, two-thirds of all bottled water sales (single 16.9 oz. bottles) work out to about $7.50 a gallon—2,000 times the cost of water from the tap. This huge disparity in price is even more striking considering that almost half (over 47%) of bottled water is from the same municipal sources that deliver water to…  yes… our faucets.

Environmental Costs of Plastic Water Bottles

Bottle doomsday clock (swaldrop.com)Price is likely the reason more people do not regularly drink bottled water. But there are additional costs that few of us consider when we choose between tap and bottle. The advent of the plastic water bottle has created an environmental toll that far exceeds minor deficiencies in the tap water system.

EcoWatch estimates that every year, 100,000 marine mammals and up to a million seabirds die after eating or being snared by plastic marine litter. Ninety percent of floating marine debris is plastics.

The plastic in your water bottle is called Polyethylene terephthalate (PET). PET, a petroleum-based plastic, is considered safe for human use and is easily recycled. But the environmental costs of using PET are very high. According to the peer-reviewed and respected 2009 study by the Pacific Institute, the production of 8.2 million gallons of bottled water in the United States:

Energy required to bottle water, by source (pacinst.org

  • Required nearly 900,000 tons of PET.
  • Consumed the equivalent of 17 million barrels of oil—enough to fuel 400,000 cars for one year.
  • Emitted 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide, our most common greenhouse gas.

The bottled water industry has in part addressed this concern: water bottles today use less PET than those we drank from in 2006 (have you noticed how squishy the newer bottles are?). But bottled water sales have been accelerating. In 2013, over 10.1 million gallons of of bottled water were sold in the US, a 13% increase over 2006.

Tap water is piped from the source to the consumer. Nearly all bottled water is transported by truck:

  • 56% of bottled water is derived from non-municipal sources and requires transport from the source to the processing facility.
  • Bottled water is trucked from the processing plant, to the distribution center, and then to the the retail outlet.
  • More than 1 billion bottles of water are transported in the U.S. every week by truck, rail, or ship.

The Pacific Institute calculated that the total energy output involved in the production of bottled water in the US, including production of plastic bottles, shipping, and cooling, was between 32 and 52 million barrels of oil, a staggering 2,000 times the energy cost of producing tap water.

Recycling Plastic Water Bottles

Recycling of PET bottles has also increased in the last few years. This may sound impressive and hopeful, but consider that the rate of recycling all PET water bottles and jars in the U.S. stands at about 31%.

Sounds good? That’s 2-1 in favor of the trash can. In 2012, 9.3 billion water bottles were recycled, but 20.7 billion were thrown out—a rate of 56.7 million discards daily.

Carbon footprint of recycling (regenerate.com)Now, the CO2 output in the production of a water bottle using recycled PET (rPET)is 65% less than using that of using virgin plastic, and the cost is 20% less. But in 2011, only 4.4% of all food and beverage containers in the US were made with rPET. Instead, our recycled plastic was sold to burgeoning lucrative markets for new products, including plastic clothing, packaging, and industrial carpeting. 34% of US rPET is sold overseas.

Because PET does not biodegrade, it can remain almost indefinitely in landfills. Sixty million water bottles daily (more than 4 billion pounds a year) end up in our landfills. PET does degrade after prolonged exposure to sunlight and water. But in doing so, it breaks up into small flakes that find their way into our waterways. According to the Ocean Conservancy,

“[P]lastic bottles and plastic bags are the most prevalent form of pollution found on our beaches and in our oceans. Every square mile of the ocean has over 46,000 pieces of floating plastic in it.”

Go Back To The Tap

Next time you consider buying a liter of bottled water, remember that you are really paying more than twice the price per gallon of a gallon of gas. And remember what else went into that bottle.

Imagine that water bottle one-quarter full of oil. That oil represents the amount of petroleum used in the packaging, distribution, and cooling of a single bottle of water. Recycle it, and more energy will be consumed and it might leave the US manufacturing cycle. Put it in the trash, and it will remain in the landfill for hundreds of years. Discard it, and chances are that your careless junk will end up in the nearest stream, river, or ocean.

Try a filter for your faucet if you still mistrust the tap. The next time you walk out the door, fill up your reusable water bottle in your own kitchen. You’ll be pleased with your water’s purity and taste. Your budget will get a break, and the earth will breathe just a little bit easier.

THE MESSAGE FROM WATER, Children Version (English)

It’s the project that Masaru Emoto launched in hope that this planet earth will be peaceful forever where everyone can live happily. The peace project goal is to educate the truth of water to children all around the world by distributing picture book of THE MESSAGE FROM WATER to children for free so that the entire world will be a sustainable, beautiful, and peaceful place.

Activities of Emoto Peace Project

  • Provide education in conjunction with the importance of water to children and people around children.
  • Organize events and seminars with the purpose to educate the importance of water.
  • Research and development related to water, and support and provide information on their results.
  • Sell products such as books, CDs, DVDs, and other products to educate people about the importance of water.

Through more than 20 years of research on water, Masaru Emoto discovered the followings:

  • There are crystals in water molecules when you freeze water and observe it with a microscope.
  • The forms of crystals depend on the information that water receives from outside such as words, music, thoughts, prayers, and so on.
  • Water makes beautiful crystals upon receiving positive information, on the other hand, the crystals are ugly when receiving negative information.
  • The word “Thank you” has a good energy, and the word “You fool” has a bad energy. Ignoring is denying its existence and gives the worst effect.

The children’s book of “The Message from Water” explains above findings with water crystal photos. You will see the reactions of water after it has been subjected to different kinds of thoughts. Thoughts of the destructive or negative kind form very different crystals than the crystals which form after being sent thoughts of love, appreciation, and gratitude.

water crystals

Dr. Emoto learned that the revelation that our thoughts can influence water has profound implications, not only for our own health but for the well-being of our planet.

All the supporters around the world help us translate the book into their local languages and distribute their language versions to children for free so that all children in the world will be able to read and learn the importance of water.

Japanese, English, Spanish (2 kinds), Colombian version, Polish, Bulgarian, German (2 kinds), Indonesian, Turkish, French, Russian, Hebrew, Norwegian, Mongolian, Formosan (Taiwanese), Chinese, Portuguese, Albanian, Slovenian, Macedonian, Serbian, Greek, Rumanian, Burmese

Brasilia, Brazil

EMOTO PEACE PROJECT is an effort to make the children’s book, THE MESSAGE FROM WATER, reach all children on earth. Through this book, they will learn that we are all water ourselves and that water is supporting our life. Through water crystal photos, they will learn that all water on this planet earth has information, and the form of water crystals differs depending on the information that water has. They will let children know the importance of people’s consciousness, words, and thoughts. It will help children grow spiritually and will help create peaceful world.

Why is EPP important now?

Water is the most important substance for human and all beings. However, the study on water is still behind. We have been having abnormal weather with water in many places in the world. Nothing can live without water, and it is not just the problem of the earth. We all shall learn about important water, and let’s all make actions together. Let us pass on simple and beautiful message of water to children around the world so we can all change the world for the better together.

When a human being first comes to this planet earth physically, that is when father’s sperm and mother’s egg meet with each other and become fertilized. At this time, we are 95% is water, so we are almost all water. As we become an adult, water in our body is about 70%. So, we might want to say that we are almost made of water. We live surrounded by many kinds of “water” every day.

The earth is called “water planet” whose surface is surrounded by 70% water. Human beings and the earth are alike. Most part of water on earth is ocean, and there is water in the air in the forms of clouds and fogs, rain water, groundwater, lakes and ponds, rivers, snow on top of high mountains, Antarctic ice… they are all water.

From Masaru Emoto’s study on water through more than tens of thousands water crystal photos that his laboratory has taken, we have learned that positive intentions, words, music, vibrations affect water beautifully, on the other hands, negative intentions, words, music, vibrations affect water negatively and ugly. As both we human beings and the earth are almost 70% water, we can improve both our environment and ourselves and make it the better place for all; animals, insects, trees, plants, mineral, and all beings to live if we change our everyday attitudes, words, and consciousness in a better way because we all live on this earth.
Present environment of the earth is at the very critical point, and we can make it sustainable together if we learn about water and make action together. It is the project for all the precious children to be able to live happily in 10 years, 20 years, 100 years, and 200 years from now.

Why children?

Children are pure. If we give them a chance to learn about water and the true nature of us human beings, they will grow with the right knowledge to be a good person with the attitude of love and gratitude. We hope that children will lead the earth in a favorable direction in 10 to 20 years from now. We hope that the book, THE MESSAGE FROM WATER, will be translated into many languages and be of help to all children around the world.

This is EMOTO PEACE PROJECT, and the mission is to distribute children’s book, THE MESSAGE FROM WATER, to children around the world to make the better place to live.

Experiments with different words

As people learn that water reacts happily when we show or say good words to water and it reacts in a negative way as we show or say negative words, many children in many different countries have done various experiments. Below are some examples:

*** Rice Experiment ***

Someone did a rice experiment with words using in 2001.
The picture below is the photo of the experience.

Rice Experiment

*** Flower Experiment ***

Rebecca got 3 pots of same size and same color.
She wrote “I love you”, “I hate you”, and “Ignored”, and put them on the pots, and she said each words to the flowers every day. She took photos of the flowers every day for 30 days.
She did not give any water during these 30 days of experiment. You can see the results clearly even with flowers.
Flower Experiment

Some children have sent us their thoughts after doing the experiments. They all learned that positive words affect positively and negative words affect negatively to their surroundings. After the experiments, they will want to use good words. They will want to say “Thank you” to everyone and everything. They will want to change the world in a better way!

Earth Day – Tuesday, April 22, 2014!

Aflac employee-led Green Committee regularly sponsors events that increase sensitivity to the environment. On Earth Day last year, Aflac dumped a truck load of office trash onto the parking lot of the Georgia-based company's headquarters.

Aflac employees picked through garbage bags in search of recyclable plastic, aluminum, and cardboard for Earth Day last year.

John Roach

for National Geographic

More than a billion people around the world will celebrateEarth Day on April 22, 2014—the 44th anniversary of the annual day of action.

Earth Day began in 1970, when 20 million people across the United States—that’s one in ten—rallied for increased protection of the environment.

“It was really an eye-opening experience for me,” Gina McCarthy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency administrator, who was a self-described self-centered teenager during the first Earth Day rallies, told National Geographic. (See pictures: “The First Earth Day—Bell-Bottoms and Gas Masks.“)

“Not only were people trying to influence decisions on the Vietnam War,” she recalled, “but they were beginning to really focus attention on issues like air pollution, the contamination they were seeing in the land, and the need for federal action.”

At the time, she said, the environment was in visible ruins—factories legally spewed black clouds of pollutants into the air and dumped toxic waste into streams. (Learn more about air pollution.)

“I can remember the picture of the Cuyahoga River being on fire,” she said, referring to the Ohio waterway choked with debris, oil, sludge, industrial wastes, and sewage that spectacularly erupted in flames on June 22, 1969, and caught the nation’s attention.

Although members of the public were increasingly incensed at the lack of legal and regulatory mechanisms to thwart environmental pollution, green issues were absent from the U.S. political agenda.

First Earth Day “Took Off Like Gangbusters”

The environment’s low profile frustrated U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, whose campaigns to protect it during the 1960s had fallen flat.

In 1969 Nelson hit on the idea of an environmental protest modeled after anti-Vietnam War teach-ins.

“It took off like gangbusters. Telegrams, letters, and telephone inquiries poured in from all across the country,” Nelson recounted in an essay shortly before he died in July 2005 at 89. “The American people finally had a forum to express its concern about what was happening to the land, rivers, lakes, and air—and they did so with spectacular exuberance.” (Related: “Earth Day Pictures: 20 Stunning Shots of Earth From Space.”)

Nelson recruited activist Denis Hayes to organize the April 22, 1970, teach-in, which today is sometimes credited with launching the modern environmental movement.

By the end of 1970, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency had been established, and efforts to improve air and water quality were gaining political traction.

“It was truly amazing what happened,” Kathleen Rogers, president of the Washington, D.C.-based Earth Day Network, told National Geographic News in 2009. “Blocks just tumbled.”

First graders at the University of Memphis Campus School in Tennessee planted watermelon seeds to celebrate Earth Day.

Earth Day Evolves

Since the first Earth Day, environmentalism has moved from a fringe issue to a mainstream concern, Amy Cassara told National GeographicNews in 2010, when she was a senior associate at the World Resources Institute in Washington, D.C.

“As many as 80 percent of Americans describe themselves as environmentalists,” Cassara said.

Environmental problems today, however, are less immediate than dirty air, toxic water, and a hole in the ozone layer, she said. For example, the effects of global climate change are largely abstract and difficult to explain “without coming off as a doomsday prognosticator.” (See pictures of Earth Day stunts.)

“As we become more industrialized and our supply chains become less transparent,” she added, “it can be more difficult to understand the environmental consequences of our actions.”

McCarthy is in a new battle to protect Americans from modern environmental threats such as global climate change, which she called “one of the most significant, if not the most significant, public health issue of our time.” (See a map of global warming effects.)

As EPA chief, she is charged with implementing large portions of President Barack Obama’s controversial climate action plan, such as carbon pollution standards for new and existing power plants, which the agency says will help protect millions of Americans from the dangers of a warming planet.

Grassroots Power

People in the modern-day environmental movement, McCarthy noted, should remember the power of the grassroots activism that spurred the first Earth Day in 1970.

“It wasn’t so much about demanding national action,” she said. “It was about demanding that individuals get engaged, [and] that would then push national action.” (See your pictures of Earth.)

McCarthy is especially keen to hear more voices from minority and low-income communities, which are disproportionately affected by environmental hazards. “This is an issue where we need everybody to speak up,” she said.

Though huge problems remain, McCarthy noted, the impact of that first Earth Day has been profound. Since then, the nation’s air and water have become dramatically cleaner, and lead has disappeared from gasoline—while the economy has more than doubled in size.

“Really, it all began with Earth Day,” she said, “and the ability to have a grassroots movement that demanded that we keep people safe while we continue to grow the economy.”

Each journey can be taken over and over again, helping you to work through real life issues or receive guidance and understanding for your spiritual growth. The journeys are intended to be used for self-exploration and awareness, leading to transformation, but you can also use them for relaxation or just for fun.
This downloadable package consists of 8 audio mp3s (including seven guided journeys and 1 invocation) and a beautiful 53-page workbook in pdf format. She also includes three relaxing and healing guided meditations in mp3 format as a BONUS.
